... fondness for the body in burlesque and the striptease era. Some performers prefer the conceptual aspect of burlesque- the capacity to place biting social satire into the shows. My shows are about the body, others may be about their minds.
I realised some time ago that I am a showgirl. When I perform it is to show the girl, whereas some performers take the approach of caricaturing or "burlesqueing" the girl. From the Victorian era of Lydia's subversive British Blondes I take their sexual awarishness, from the strippers of the mid twentieth century I take the layers, and from the showgirls of Montmartre I take the dance and the aesthetic. As a showgirl today, I find a home within the form of burlesque, alongside many others who also perform, some in vastly different ways, and for vastly different reasons. This is a wonderful time to be a showgirl, or a burlesque performer.
